My latest ultra-mega project at McAfee rolled out last night. All of the McAfee consumer product websites are now running on a common UI architecture of my design. Each of the 25 locales now boasts a standards-based xHTML structure, XML l10n-friendly content file format, a whole gang of CSS improvements, a new fancy-pants visual design and more infrastructure tweaks that I could possibly fit into a post.

Without giving away company secrets, my changes helped to reduce approximately 20,000 XML/XSLT logic-content files, 250 CSS files, 450 application logic files (e-commerce, messaging, partners, promos, etc.) to approximately 150 total files, separated into logic and purpose with an intuitive directory tree. My goal was a global site that supports locale content and visual design branches with the fewest amount of code-changes necessary but to accommodate scaling with basic web servers alone. Oh and do it with XSL, XML and other flat files.

I have run projects like this before at other places I have worked over the years, but I have always wanted to be involved with an optimization project at a global level. This is why I am so happy this project with McAfee turned out so well. I need someone to send me my i18n 1st place blue ribbon now, thanks!

Now with that project off my back, I'm ready for some new challenges!
