Nope, this thing is solid.
It helps that the supports are made from solid cast iron and each one weights about 35 pounds. The bench weighs in at about 85 pounds for the entire thing. We double-measured each and every cut and hole to make sure the thing was level as well and the lag bolts bring the whole thing together nicely.
That is awesome. The orientation of the bolts is especially nice. Good job.
Thanks! The bolts do line up well don't they.
This thing is truly a classic. The paint that was originally used really preseved most of the metal from corrosion and the new paint we put on there is "space age" so it should work even better.
As for the my modern "steel" deck chairs you see in some of those pictures; I bought those about 3 years ago. They are just about ready to fall apart. Thin steel tubes with a thin layer of cheap paint didn't last very long. And they haven't really even seen much butt action either, compared to this bench.
Very well done restoration job. Check out my mom's Flickr feed for some of the antiques they have collected over the years. My brother and I grew up in a sort of museum atmosphere, which was more fun than it might sound (there were no velvet ropes keeping us cordoned off from various items.)
They even have a vintage typewriter like the one you or V mentioned in an earlier entry.
I went and looked the photo stream. Your right they sure many antiques. If we go back to that Flea market this month, I just might get that typewriter. I don't know what I will do with it, but it sure was neat.
