Apple puts the smack down on iGo MagSafe tips

I just got notification from iGo (the fancy universal power adapter) that they were ready to release a MagSafe compatible adapter for the Apple MacBook but received word from Apple that doing so would be some sort of licensing infringement.

Dear iGo Customer:

Thank you for indicating your interest in an iGo tip for your Apple MacBook (or MacBook Pro). Our engineers have been working to create a MagSafe tip that meets both iGo's and Apple's standards.

This tip was scheduled to be released this month…. but it is now on hold. As an Apple partner, we are hoping to work with Apple for licensing of these products (as we have done for our tips for iPods); however Apple does not currently have a licensing program for MagSafe tips. Therefore, Apple has not authorized us to release our MagSafe tips.

If you are so inclined, please suggest to Apple that they develop a licensing program for MagSafe tips. We would like to be able to offer these to iGo power adapter customers with Apple MacBooks.

We will continue to work with Apple to seek approval for these tips and will keep you updated. Thank you for your patience and for being an iGo customer.

I'm not sure about you, but I would love to use my iGo power supplies with my MacBook. I have a tip for just about every component I travel with, except the Macbook.

Apple, this is your best quarter ever, you made billions of dollars. How about licensing out your MagSafe power connector?

Oh schlade, you mean people were using Boot Camp?

If you are still running Tiger and you need to remove a Windows Boot Camp partition, you are going to be disappointed. Apple greedily expired the Boot Camp beta on Tiger to get you to migrate to Leopard.

This Apple support article instructs you to go back in time to get the Boot Camp Assistant working again. Naturally.

Elbows into Apple folks and all its starting to smell more like a Microsoft every day.

Applescript iTunes 7.6 and Firefox 2.0.0.11 m3u file un-fcker

This is basically an Applescript that will create a duplicate (but usable) .m3u file from one you drop on it. This duplicate has a new file format that iTunes 7.6 can actually use.

Note: The new file will have a new extension appended to the file name of ".fixed.m3u".

This is only a fix for Mac OSX. I am starting to see error reports on this behavior so it is just a temporary fix until ~~the damn thing~~ iTunes is updated again.

Update 2/27/08 - iTunes 7.6.1 for OSX seems to have included a fix for the problem. I don't think you need to use this script any longer. I am leaving it up for archival purposes.

Applescript m3u parser

Based on the parsing example in Ryan Armstrong's Import M3U, I put together an OSX Applescript Droplet that imports m3u paylist file content into day/time stamped playlists for iTunes.

The main difference between our scripts is the droplet, the ability to preserve file paths and adding the new m3u tracks into a unique playlist.

Just unzip and drop your m3u files onto the droplet icon. I have tested it with several m3u files, but alas, yours might not work. Best of luck.

Camino 1.5 is out

Look, I'm blogging about Mac stuff now. Neat.

Camino 1.5 is out, although I can't figure out why you would want to install it. The only feature I think it supports that Firefox doesn't is Keychain access, but I could be wrong (Tim?).

The useful browsers for Mac OSX I have installed are Firefox 1.5, Firefox 2, Firefox 3b, OmniWeb, Safari, Opera 9, and iCab. What else am I missing?
