I received an e-mail from a friend pointing out that the Reno/Tahoe airport in Reno is only 1 driving hour away from Tahoe City. I got to thinking about this and did some price shopping for Tahoe City and South Lake Tahoe flights.

Note, A typical ski weekend for me is from Friday morning through Sunday night.

Southwest airlines from Oakland to South Lake Tahoe via Reno/Tahoe airport:

      * Roundtrip Southwest Tickets: $139.20

      * Roundtrip Bus transportation to South Lake Resort: $46.50
      -or- Roundtrip Air Taxi to South Lake Tahoe Airport: $430.00

      Total: $185.70
      Time: 50 minute flight, 90 minute bus ride
  
Not bad. Considering driving back and forth is about 400 miles, plus 7 hours on the road if traffic is good coming back from Tahoe. The costs for driving are roughly $50 in gasoline in a vehicle that will do well in snow.

I still think if you could fly directly into South Lake Tahoe on a large carrier that would make these prices and times even better, but alas the airport is pretty small.

Getting down to Tahoe City from Reno seems like it would be faster and cheaper, but alas I haven't been able to find a bus that makes a stop there. I would probably have to jump on the TART and hitch a ride all the way back up to North Lake.

Well, there we go. I suppose I will still keep driving but it is good to know that I could fly up there. Maybe I'll post about taking the train one of these days.

Hello my loyal reader. Glad to see you stuck with me through the shallow, lame posts of the last half of last year.

Yes, I was productive all the way up until I took a new job at work and then suddenly I had no time or excitement left for posting on this blog. Oh, and don't get me started about how I left all my software and projects hanging. Your e-mail to me has been a constant ghostly reminder.

So, whats new this year? Well I am planning out more ski trips than ever before, with potentially every weekend in January spent up in Tahoe. I am lucky enough to have friends who maintain a house-rental up there and I plan on helping them fill the house as often as possible.

Other than that, things at work are going well. My first major release since I changed job roles is about to go out to customers. I expect satisfaction from them as they beta test. Hooray for security products and helping protect people from spam and malware.

If you do decide to put my feed back on your Google homepage in the hopes that I will again provide more flavorful and timely updates I think you won't be disappointed. You will again be getting updates posted on a somewhat regular basis.
